Côa Valley Rock Art, classified as World Heritage by UNESCO since 1998

The Côa Park Foundation celebrates today, December 2, the 22nd anniversary of the classification of the Côa Valley Rock Art on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

This classification, the fastest in UNESCO’s history, was based on two fundamental criteria:

“The Upper Paleolithic rock art of the Côa Valley is an exceptional illustration of the sudden development of our creative genius during the dawn of human cultural development;

The rock art of the Côa Valley exceptionally demonstrates the social, economic and spiritual life of our prehistoric ancestors”.

With this deliberation, the specialised agency, definitively confirms the importance of the Côa Valley art, which today consists of more than 1000 panels with manifestations, distributed over more than 80 sites around the last kilometres of the Côa River and near its confluence with the Douro.
