New Rock Art Discoveries in the Côa Valley

In 2025, archaeological surveys carried out by the Côa Parque Foundation identified more than twenty previously unrecorded rock surfaces bearing rock art at several sites, including Broeira, Canada do Amendoal, Bulha, Quinta da Bouça Velha and Fraga do Seno.

These discoveries built on the findings made in 2024, particularly at Ribeira de Piscos, Vale de João Esquerdo and Vale do Esfola Cabras. Identifying engravings that are often fine-lined, heavily patinated and difficult to discern requires careful and persistent survey work.

Scheduled to continue in its current form until 2027, this work aims to deepen understanding of the region’s rock art, explore areas that remain little studied and expand the available information on previously identified sites.

As part of the Côa Parque Foundation’s mission, this research contributes to the understanding, safeguarding and promotion of a heritage that continues to yield new discoveries.
