Documentation campaign at Ribeira de Piscos revealed previously unknown rock art motifs

In July 2025, a rock art documentation campaign took place at Ribeira de Piscos, in partnership between the Côa Parque Foundation and CEAACP, at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra.

The work focused primarily on Upper Palaeolithic engravings, while also covering representations from the Iron Age and the Modern Period. It included night-time tracing, daytime and night-time photographic documentation, and photogrammetric surveys.

Detailed analysis of the tracings enabled the identification of previously unknown motifs, including horses and aurochs (wild cattle).

The campaign involved around ten undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students in Archaeology and Anthropology from the universities of Coimbra, Porto, Santiago de Compostela, Alcalá de Henares and Sorbonne. The work received logistical support from the Muxagata Parish Council.
