SUMMARY:Opening of the exhibition "Two Shades of Gray"
DESCRIPTION:Two Shades of Gray is an exhibition that emerged from Alexandre Delmar’s artistic residency in Madeira in August 2024\, as part of the Semeadores project. The exhibition explores the strategies and pastoral dynamics of the island\, addressing themes such as herding\, communication\, and orientation. Initially displayed in Funchal between October 2024 and January 2025\, it now arrives at the Côa Museum in March 2025 with a new focus on the languages of the mountains. \nThe exhibition features two main video pieces: \n\n\nPrayer to the Ears – Examines the visual code of ear cuts on goats and sheep used by shepherds for identification. This practice\, passed down through generations\, forms a unique and symbolic vocabulary. \n\n\nThe Speech of Goats and Shepherds – Madeira – A study on the communication between shepherds and their animals\, recording characteristic vocalizations and calls from Madeira. During the residency\, the strong influence of the region’s topography on how sounds echo through the landscape was observed. \n\n\nThe exhibition is part of the Inter-species axis of the Semeadores project\, which seeks to explore the flows between rural and urban spaces\, connecting landscape\, history\, and ethnography. \nAlexandre Delmar is a visual artist who investigates human/non-human relationships\, oral traditions\, and survival strategies. He is the co-founder of A Recoletora\, a project that combines art and ethnobotany. \nPhilosopher André Barata\, a collaborator in the project\, reflects on the language of shepherds\, highlighting its non-anthropocentric nature and its deep connection to geography and landscape.

SUMMARY:Graça Morais - Maps of Earth and Time
DESCRIPTION:The relation with the most primitive art form\, unknown then by the little girl who doodled on the boulders in Vieiro\, is not something new in the manner Graça Morais draws and paints\, since it has been a source of formal and pictorial investigations throughout more than 50 years of her artistic life. \nWith over 14 thousand years\, the mysterious figure that is known as bison-man and was found on the Les Trois-Frèrescave\, in France\, is one of the many references to the *Palaeolithic art that GraçaMorais transfers to her painting. As in many of her outstanding *metamorphoses\, this uncommon representation of half-man and half-animal would become the character in the enormous sceneries that she created in 1993 for the play The Screens by *Jean Genet\, brought to the stage by theExperimental Theatre of Cascais. \nTherefore\, it is not rare for this *iconography\, especially in the figurations of animals or female figures such as the *Venus by Willendorf\, to inhabit her drawings and paintings as the main characters. There are numerous examples\, namely in the work she develops during the 1980s and 1990s\, as in the series Maps and the Spirit of the Olive Tree or Vieiros that she displayed in 1983 at the 17th International Art Biennale of São Paulo\, in Brazil\, and later at the Museums of Modern Art of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. \nThe huge screens that GraçaMorais creates in 1995 for the scenography of the play Richard II\, by *William Shakespeare\, held on the D. Maria II National Theatre (whose size is impossible to present in this exhibition)\, result also from the multiple readings of this ancient art. Not only by the way it quotes and takes hold of colours and textures\, but also in the manner it transforms the animals that are found on the famous walls of *Chauvet and *Altamira Caves. \nHowever\, this alignment with the *Palaeolithic stands out in her talented drawing\, visible in the overlapping of lines and forms\, in the sudden interruption of the stroke or the fusion of elements\, where the relation with Côa’s engravings is not only highlighted\, but also cuts across the works that were carefully gathered for this exhibition\, some of which are unprecedented. \nCuratorship: Jorge da Costa \n____________________ \n*Palaeolithic: First period of history of Humankind \n*metamorphosis: transformation process that enables certain animals to become adults \n*Jean Genet: French writer and playwright (1910-1986) \n*iconography: language that uses images to depict a subject \n*Venus by Willendorf: a 11-centimeter limestone statue of a woman of exaggerated features to represent fertility \n*William Shakespeare: British writer (1564-1616) regarded as national poet; known\, for instance\, for the plays Hamlet\, Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet \n*Chauvet Cave: located on the south of France\, it has its walls decorated with 435 paintings of animals \n*Cave of Altamira: situated in Cantabria\, in Spain\, it has paintings in various colours that represent animals\, human figures and abstract drawings

SUMMARY:Anthropocene Forum 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Anthropocene Forum 2021 will be held in Foz Coa\, from June 15 to June 17 to discuss the need for an EU inclusive agenda to address the challenges that arise from a rapidly changing planet by fostering critical knowledge\, sustainable innovation and a new educational paradigm. \nAlthough these concerns are already being debated in Europe\, namely under the umbrella of sustainability transitions\, we call for a more inclusive and entangled approach based on the concept of the Anthropocene to explore\, not only the actors of the Anthropocene but also the belief systems underlying human activities. \nThe term Anthropocene was popularised in 2000 by the atmospheric chemist Paul Crutzen to acknowledge that humans have become a dominant and disruptive factor on our planet to such an extent that its future is in danger\, or more precisely\, our future on it. Climate wars\, unbridled exploitation of natural resources\, asymmetric distribution of wealth\, massive population shifts/migrations\, unexpected and extreme natural disasters\, and beyond-measure/unimaginable loss of biodiversity are some of the more evident faces of the Anthropocene predicament\, which call for urgent reflection and immediate action. \nAlthough from the geological perspective the Anthropocene is not still officially recognised as a new subdivision of the geologic time scale (even if the Anthropocene Working Group (AWG) already provided evidence that the world has indeed entered the Anthropocene)\, the concept triggered almost immediately a huge interest involving not only the scientific community (including the sciences\, engineering\, social sciences and humanities) but also artists and the general public. For it provides a platform to connect/discuss different issues across various societal groups\, ranging from academic topics to activism\, from artistic engagement to growth (and degrowth) theories\, from environmental policies to deforestation in Amazonia\, from gender and race issues to privacy and security. \nThe Anthropocene Forum 2021 uses\, therefore\, the concept of the Anthropocene as a nexus for bringing together a multi-layered analysis of the most pressing issues we face today at the global scale\, calling for a discussion grounded on the famous Bill McKibben’s appraisal of the “end of nature” coupled with the discussion on how to demand from governments and corporations to implement and enforce effective changes. \nBased on its members’ history and on its collective history\, the European Union is particularly tailored to host this discussion and the Portuguese Presidency\, by summoning up Portugal’s strong links with both Africa and Brazil\, is the perfect venue to strengthen a worldwide dialogue on the Anthropocene challenges\, based on the articulation of both the scales of the global and of the local.

SUMMARY:Sound workshop - Collection of sound fragments for an imagined landscape
DESCRIPTION:“Collection of sound fragments for an imagined landscape” is a workshop dedicated to people interested in sound and sound experimentation\, electronic music and field recordings. It includes theoretical discussions\, field and studio work. It focuses\, as a starting point\, on the creation of a sound narrative using recordings made in the surrounding area of the space where the workshop takes place. Participants will be invited to walk around the area and collect sounds with different characteristics in order to gather fragments of “memory” of the chosen areas (sound cartography). Our goal is to offer the participants the opportunity to develop a collective sound project\, get to know new ways and perspectives of listening to the sound that surrounds us\, as well as develop technical bases for recording\, editing\, processing and audio mixing. \nFor more information and reservation: csf.workshop.info@gmail.com \nPublic Target: General public \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:The National Archaeological Museum\, in collaboration with the Coa Parque Foundation\, will open on January 30 at 6 pm the exhibition “Tribute to the Engravings of the Côa River Valley”. \nThis exhibition is composed of works of art by Portuguese artists\, namely Mario Cesariny\, Graça Morais\, Rui Chafes\, Jose Pedro Croft\, Manuel Zimbro\, Lourdes Castro\, Angelo de Sousa\, among others\, who joined the social movement that\, in the mid-nineties of the twentieth century prevented the construction of a dam on the Côa River that would entail the destruction of this heritage. \nThe exhibition is accompanied by a catalog organized by Ana Pessoa Mesquita with texts by Pedro Proença and Duarte Belo\, also author of the photographs. \nAfter having been exhibited together after more than 20 years at the commemorative exhibition of the 20th anniversary of UNESCO World Heritage Site listing that was shown at the Côa Museum in 2019\, the Lisbon public will now be able to appreciate these multifaceted works\, united in the effort to preserve the Côa Valley rock art. \nPoster: Acrylic on paper\, Mario Cesariny “The Engravings Can’t Swim” (detail)\, 1995 \n

SUMMARY:Inauguration of the digital renovation of the Coa Museum
DESCRIPTION:Resulting from a new look at the Coa rock art\, incorporating augmented and virtual reality\, the aim of this renovation is to bring the societies that produced these artistic motifs closer to visitors. To questions such as “Who were the Coa artists?”\, “How did they live?”\, “Why Coa?” or “Why did they produced the rock art?” intuitive\, pedagogical\, and entertaining response clues are suggested. This project was coordinated by the Coa Parque Foundation and byAR\, a partnership that ensured the production\, adequacy\, and relevance of selected contents\, covering subjects as diverse as Archeology and Art History or Geology and Biology. \nWe are very proud of this technological and content update since it was possible to reconcile scientific rigor with the playful enjoyment of knowledge. Lifting the tip of the veil\, below you may find one of the many animations that will bring more life to the Museum’s permanent exhibition: a wild goat from Fariseu rock 1 that will be projected through video mapping on the replica of that same rock present in Room E. \nWe hope you enjoy! \n  \nhttps://arte-coa.pt/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/CabraMontes_03_VideoCrop.mp4

SUMMARY:Inauguration of the exhibition The Coa Story at Ulsan Museum\, South Korea
DESCRIPTION:On October 17th\, the Ulsan Museum (South Korea) will open the exhibition “The Coa Story”\, promoted by the Ulsan Museum\, in partnership with the Côa Parque Foundation. This exhibition evokes the so-called ‘Côa Miracle’ which led to the cancellation of the construction of the Côa dam\, in an international movement led by young students from Vila Nova de Foz Côa Secondary School. It should be noted that the important Bangudae Petroglyphs\, which the authorities of that country intend to list as a UNESCO’s World Heritage Site\, have been suffering from the negative impacts of rising / lowering waters of a dam built before the discovery of the rock art\, in the mid-1970s.

SUMMARY:Opening of the Exhibition: "Crossing Europe With Rock Art"
DESCRIPTION:After the Côa Valley Rock Art was presented in Azerbaijan\, the Côa Museum now hosts an exhibition by the Gobustan National Historical-Artistic Preserve\, again promoted within the Council of Europe Cultural Itinerary\, PRAT – Prehistoric Rock Art Trails. \nThe Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape is located west of the Gobustan Raion\, between the Qaradağ raion Districts\, Baku Administrative Territory\, 64 kilometers southwest of the Gobustan Raion. In 1966\, the region was declared Azerbaijan’s national historic monument to ensure the preservation and conservation of ancient carvings\, rocks and caves with prehistoric inscriptions and hundreds of constantly active volcanoes.\nIn 2007\, the site was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. \nThe Gobustan National Reserve is rich in archaeological records of the human presence. The reserve already has more than 6\,000 individualized rock paintings\, carved on hundreds of rocks\, and artistically reveal the continuing presence of human occupation on the site\, with engravings of primitive men\, animals\, battle pieces\, ritual dances. \, bullfighting\, rowboats\, warriors with spears in their hands\, camel caravans\, images of the sun and stars\, produced over 20\,000 years (end of the last Ice Age – Upper Paleolithic – until the Middle Ages). Gobustan is the most popular national reserve in the country and also concentrates the richest mineral reserve of Azerbaijan (WIKIPEDIA). \nThe opening of this exhibition closes the 1st National Meeting of Prehistoric Art\, which will take place at the Côa Museum Auditorium\, on October 9th\, this year marking\, for the first time\, the European Day of Rock Art.
