“Stone Age Art in the Coa Valley”

“A dam should be built here. In the nineties, the authorities wanted to create a huge reservoir in the middle of the peaceful landscape of the Coa Valley. But the olive and almond trees that shape the landscape in this hidden, remote corner of Portugal still stand. It was really close, but the inhabitants and a few archaeologists were barely able to save this beautiful natural landscape. In 1998, UNESCO declared the last twenty kilometers of the Coa Valley a World Heritage Site. This stopped the already started construction of the dam project. What happened?”
