ROOM C. Geographic and cultural context of the art at Côa

The first explanations for Palaeolithic art arose in the second half of the nineteenth century, at the time of the first modern discoveries of such sites. Many different theories have existed since then, and some have even denied the authenticity of such art due to the surprising artistic quality at some sites. Nowadays, though, we know that since the start of the
Upper Palaeolithic humans have possessed a well developed capacity to produce sophisticated and beautiful artwork.

The large concentration of Palaeolithic art sites on the Iberian Peninsula permits comparison of the styles and the appropriate chronological contextualisation of the themes existing at Vale do Côa.

Each panel is exhibited through drawings and photographs, which are non-destructive processes, essential for the meticulous study of cave art.
